Steph Clark

Stephanie Clark is a bass clarinet specialist and composer based in London. An avid proponent of new music, she has worked with composers including Claudio Ambrosini, Louis Andriessen and Gunther Schuller, and has premiered many new solo and ensemble works. As a champion of the bass clarinet, Stephanie has extensive experience working collaboratively with composers to develop new works that highlight the immense capabilities of the instrument.

About Steph

Stephanie has performed as a solo, ensemble and orchestral player with groups including Ensemble Ugo, Boston New Music Initiative, Hapax Orchestra, Orchestra Nouveau, New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, Improbable Beasts and the Berklee Silent Film Orchestra. Stephanie’s debut album, Waning Crescent, features all new works for solo bass clarinet by women composers, and was premiered as part of the Month of Contemporary Music Berlin. She can also be heard as a session player in the films The Man Who Laughs, The Last Laugh, Varieté and the Jules Verne documentary Passage to Mars, and has premiered and recorded many original film scores. Her performances have been heard in world renowned film festivals in San Francisco and throughout New England, and in venues including London’s Cadogan and Wigmore Halls and Symphony Hall and Mechanics Hall in the USA. As a student at the Boston Conservatory she was selected to work with artists including Monica Germino, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and Claire Chase, and performed as an alumni in their New Music Festival with composer and clarinettist Eric Mandat in his Shadows from Flames.

Stephanie has a MMus from Trinity Laban Conservatoire and a BMus and a G.P.D. with Auxiliary Specialization in Bass Clarinet from the Boston Conservatory. In 2023 she won the Wilfred Hambleton Clarinet Competition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire and was a TCL, The Headley Trust, and Gladys Bratton Scholar during her program. Stephanie has studied with Fiona Cross, Anthony Pike, Paolo De Gaspari, and Michael Norsworthy.

In 2024, Steph became a recognised Selmer Artist.​
